Bernard Coldtooth
Bernard Coldtooth was a powerful antagonist of Demon Squad. He was once the second-in-command of The Crows before fleeing during the coup d'état that ousted Lyssa. He had a reputation for being well-dressed and tough in a fight.
After Lyssa was killed, Bernard disappeared, perhaps fearing for his own life. It is unclear exactly what happened to him during this period, but we know that he escaped to The Deathlands for a period of some months before returning to Doskvol with Old Earless at his side. By the time he returned, he had been possessed by the demon named Laba’gurtr’an.
Bernard blamed Demon Squad for the death of Lyssa, to whom he was intensely loyal. In her final days as leader of The Crows, Lyssa attempted to hire Demon Squad to dispel the spirit of Rorick. Demon Squad, however, opted to capture the rogue spirit and hand it off to the faction within The Crows who wanted Lyssa gone. This faction released the unhinged ghost of Rorick, killing Lyssa and most of her allies within The Crows.
Bernard began a campaign of vengeance against Demon Squad, hitting our runners and disrupting our distribution routes. Michael informed us of the return of Bernard, and told us that The Crows had also been victims of his score-settling.
Demon Squad learned from Cornelius Drinkofwater that Bernard was likely partially possessed by a demon. That demon's campaign against us was motivated by our stripping of magical inclination from Lord Mora, with whom the demon had a partnership.
Because Bernard had been seen together with Old Earless, Demon Squad broke into Old Earless' house to find more information on the duo's activities. This information led us to Edna Smalls, who then directed us to The Musty Claptrap, whose barkeeper then directed us to a fastener shop run by The Hive. We threatened the clerk to give up the location of Old Earless, who told us that he had an apartment three doors down. We were then able to capture Old Earless.
The now-imprisoned Old Earless told us that Bernard was staying with a noble in Whitecrown. We struck a deal with Old Earless to release him in exchange for him writing a letter for us to use to draw Bernard out to the Sickdick Lane Warehouse. He agreed, and Demon Squad posed as members of The United Postalworkers to drop this letter off at the estate of Lyle Lamora, where Bernard was staying.
Psspsspss was able to get the name of the demon, Laba’gurtr’an, from Scary Homie, in exchange for a favor.
The letter was sufficient to lure Bernard out to the warehouse, where Demon Squad had made our magic circle and was preparing to perform the ritual. The Butler lured him inside and Psspsspss immediately shot him, blowing off his leg at the knee. Out of this stump flowed a tentacle of the demon Laba’gurtr’an. This was Demon Squad's first time observing the true form of a demon. As we performed the ritual, Bernard's body died and crumbled away, leaving only Laba’gurtr’an.
Laba’gurtr’an attempted to sway Demon Squad to let him remain free, but we did not accept his offer. Laba’gurtr’an is now imprisoned in a soul gem held by The Gondoliers.
